Can lack of sleep/extended insomnia cause depression?

I was just wondering if there were any known links between continuous lack of sleep and depression. I know depression can cause lack of sleep but is it ever the other way around?

Yes, it dose perpetuate itself, untill the point where you have no energey to deal with it and stop careing about beeing awake or asleep and then end up sleeping on and off constantly. but yes, one can cause teh other, so both are usualy conected

Of course! We need to sleep to function during the day. If you’re not getting enough of it your brain starts to shut down on you. You get so cranky, or you fall asleep at the worst times like while driving. It’s a horrible way to live.

    Absolutely.
Used to work long weekend, night & rotating shifts & would suffer sleep deprivation.
It was in a hospital so I had plenty of experts to ask.
Told the “depression” was most likely ust feeling crappy from loss of sleep and stress, common & not necessarily clinical depression.
Certain it can make depression worse.
Got better when I had regular hours.
    That was just me.
Always best to see an MD.
