    Insomnia implies that you are unable to sleep;
    sleep deprivation means being unable to sleep but this could be because you are being tortured.

    If someone prevents you from sleeping, you are not suffering from insomnia but are suffering from sleep deprivation.

    Um, inner vs outer causation?

    Insomnia is a symptom of any of several sleep disorders, characterized by persistent difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep despite the opportunity. Insomnia is a symptom, not a stand-alone diagnosis or a disease.

    Sleep deprivation, a sleep disorder characterized by having too little sleep, can be either chronic or acute. Long-term sleep deprivation causes death in lab animals. A chronic sleep-restricted state can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight gain.
